Thoughts on the movie Lord of Rings

I've heard that Lord of Rings is a great movie, and there are many big fans of it. Last year, I travelled to New Zealand, where Lord of Rings took place. I visited Frodo Baggins’ village, and there were many people visiting and tickets were sold out. I vaguely remembered that I had watched clips and the beginning of the lord of rings, which I did not feel was a good movie that many people think. But after a recent attempt to watch it, I got the movie, and I can see why It is a great movie.

The movie was about a powerful ring that can rule the world. The ring is borned with evil intent to bring destruction. And, the ring was lost when there was a battle of a coalition of men, dwarf and elves, v.s orcs. Orcs side had the powerful ring. The coalition wants to destroy the Ring. The coalition wins. The men king had a chance to destroy the Ring, but was corrupted by the Ring. Allured by the powerful Ring, the men king wanted to keep the powerful ring to himself. The fate had a different plan. The men king lost the Ring, and together with it, the king lost his life. After a long time, the Ring was discovered again, first by Gollum, then Bilbo Baggins, then in the hand of Frodo Baggin. Then Frodo Baggin starts the journey of destroying the Ring that should have been destroyed.

The greatness of the movies, in my view, is showing the Ring effect on the different characters. And the fate, and consequences it would bring. Interestingly, nowhere in the story, the actual power of the Ring is not shown at all, except that it can prolong life. The omission is not a bug, but a feature. The point isn’t about the power of the Ring, but it is about Ring's evil effects on the souls. Starting with Gollum, he is the most tragic character whose heart can easily be corrupted. When his friend first discovers it in a river while hanging out with Gollum, his friend is enticed right away. Upon seeing the Ring, Gollum is enticed as well, and first argues with, and then fights with his friend, and ultimately kills his friend for getting the Ring. THe dramatic events all happen quickly in the spot that they are hanging out. Having the Ring, Gollum is conflicted and fearful of losing it. Gollum moves to the mountain and lives in solitude with the Ring. Over time, Gollum became more and more ugly, living in the mountain with the Ring. Until Bilbo Baggins showed up and discovered the Ring by accident while the Ring was lost by Gollum, Gollum did not leave the moutain.

Bilbo Baggins keeps the Ring in secret which gives him a long life. Bilbo Baggins is less corrupted by the Ring, but he is also attached to the Ring and not letting go. Until his wise friend Gandalf showed up. He felt there was something strange about Bilbo, and he saw the Ring and a glimpse of the evil strong attachment to the Ring that Bilbo had. At some moment, Gandalf touched the Ring, which Gandalf saw the Ring may bring to him. Being a wise wizard, he knew he cannot have the Ring which would corrupt him. After Gandalf had thought for a long thought, Gandalf needed more time to research, so he went back to his study place, and found out the Ring’s origin. He came back and insisted the Ring be left to Frodo Baggin, who was the heir of his property. Frodo Baggin has pure heart given his age and character, and the Ring did not entice him at the moment, and Frodo Baggin started the long difficult journey of going to a volcano to destroy the Ring, together with friends.

Along the way, Frodo Baggin not only faced an external struggle of enemies like Orcs coming for him to take the Ring , Frodo Baggin had an internal struggle with Ring itself. He became more and more attached to the Ring similar to previous Ring holders, and he felt the burden heavier. Some of his friends along the way were craving the Ring.

At the end, Frodo Baggin had been corrupted long enough, and he did not have the will to destroy the Ring. Fate destroyed it, which is super poetic. Such a fate is possible only because Gollum was spared alive due to Gandalf’s mercy to Gollum’s life.
